So, you want to do a handstand?
Well, let me tell you something. A handstand is quite complex and super simple all at the same time. The most important part of sticking your handstand is PRACTICE. PRACTICE. AND MORE PRACTICE. Plus, setting yourself up for success! Most people start on the wall and move out from there. I recommend having your instructor teach you how to progress the handstand on the ladder barrel. In the classical Pilates SUPER advanced repertoire there are several handstands and variations of handstands (see previous posts about headstand on the reformer).
In my opinion, starting the process of a handstand within the confines of the ladder barrel pushed up against the wall is the safest and most accessible location to start. Eventually, as you gain confidence, move the barrel off the wall but use a spotter. With enough practice and enough consistency, it won't be long before the spotter is no longer needed!
Before you know it, you'll have a solid handstand just about anywhere. Once you have it, it's like riding a bike! The first few handstands back after a long hiatus may be shaky but it never truly leaves you.
